During the course of the campaign, I will be working hard to meet as many voters as possible to introduce myself and answer questions. What is the Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District?

Soil & Water Conservation Districts are political subdivisions of the State established under Florida Statute in accordance with the provisions of the Florida Soil Conservation District Act of 1937. Each District is governed by a board of elected supervisors. These Districts fill the crucial role of providing land and water conservation services to private land owners. Managing private lands in a way that promotes a sound economy and sustains and enhances natural resources is critical to Florida 's environmental health. Private landowners have come to rely on these Districts because they provide much-needed technology, funding and educational services. The Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District is governed by local leaders who are dedicated to the conservation of local soil and water resources.

The Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District works closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) to help people conserve all natural resources on private lands.  The NRCS provides scientific and technical experience to resolve issues and promote conservation education. Those elected to the District work in cooperation with dozens of local government officials, conservation groups, farmers, and homeowners to promote the protection of natural resources. The Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District is a five-member board that serves all of Santa Rosa County . Voters registered in Santa Rosa County elect non-partisan candidates to the Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District. The board members serve four year terms and are not paid for their service.

Why I'm Running for This Office

The Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District works to reduce non-point source pollution to make Florida 's lakes and rivers fishable and suitable for recreational activities.  Landowners across Santa Rosa County rely on the Blackwater District for technical assistance with conservation practices that protect the quality of Florida 's greatest treasure - our natural resources. As an Environmental Scientist, I have both the education and the experience to effectively serve the District and help protect these resources for future generations. There are some serious issues ahead for Santa Rosa County , and it is critically important to have a strong Soil & Water Board made up of the most qualified individuals with the proven experience to resolve these challenges.

The abundant natural resources of Florida are critical in sustaining the local economy. Our mild climate, beautiful beaches, and many recreational opportunities help draw millions of tourists every year. Vegetables and horticulture products, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry contribute significantly to Florida 's economy. I believe I can assist our local farmers with innovative strategies and best management practices to help yield more crops while minimizing adverse impacts to the environment.

I have worked as a wetlands specialist for several years for both the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I understand the importance of these resources and I believe I can assist private landowners with issues related to wetlands and water resources.

The Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District also administers grants that bring in much-needed funding to help conserve our resources. I have had the opportunity to work on several grant-funded projects throughout northwest Florida and I understand the process. I can apply this experience to help Santa Rosa County secure the necessary funding to carry out projects without burdening taxpayers.

For many years, I have been actively engaged with many conservation groups throughout Florida . In that time, I have had an opportunity to work with many individuals and dozens of projects and clean-up efforts. With your support, and my background and experience, I believe I will serve as an effective member of the Blackwater Soil & Water Conservation District.
